Intercultural Competency in Tandem
Workshops for refugees and volunteers to strengthen transcultural competency

Workshop in German and Arabic with refugees and volunteers (May 2017)
Workshops for refugees and volunteers
Volunteers and refugees come face to face, establish and forge relationships – this presents an opportunity for mutual enrichment, yet also a great challenge. Irritations can arise when people from different cultural backgrounds meet, which can make living and working together difficult. Negative emotions, as well as unreflective prejudices and assessments, can disrupt or even completely hinder constructive communication. Therefore, in order to discover and benefit from intercultural encounters, it is necessary to acquire a deeper understanding of the themes associated with Intercultural Communication.
The specific goal of the workshops run by fka – Freundeskreis Asyl Karlsruhe e.V. – in cooperation with Volute, an organization for intercultural education, is to make participants aware of their own culturally-conditioned tendencies and worldviews. Participants become aware of complex intercultural processes and receive guidance in developing the skills required to navigate culturally diverse situations. Models of intercultural communication as well as cross-cultural psychology serve as the basis for this workshop, with experienced-based learning fostered through self-assessment exercises and role-plays providing the practical knowledge needed for this topic.
